On Christmas Eve 2024, Pope Francis opened the Holy Doors at Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome, officially marking the beginning of the Jubilee 2025, the Year of Hope. Every 25 years, the Church proclaims an Ordinary Jubilee Year to encourage us to embark on a pilgrimage--both spiritual and, if possible, physical--in order to re-encounter Christ and be renewed in His love.
Here's why it is important for us! In Jubilee Years, God’s love and mercy are on full display more than ever through the gift of indulgences. These are graces that reduce or can eliminate the time in Purgatory needed to purify our souls for temporal punishment not made up for while alive. This is a true gift of grace; once deceased, we rely on God's mercy, the prayers of the angels, saints, and those on earth, or indulgences to gain heaven. Upon our death, there is nothing we can do to make a difference. Good news! We can use them for ourselves or any souls we think may be in Purgatory.
Two other reasons why Jubilee 2025 is important:
The conditions and actions required for obtaining an indulgence bring us to a closer relationship with God and encourage us to love God and our neighbors as commanded.
Jubilee Years don’t come that frequently… "ordinary” jubilee years are typically every 25 years…the next one is not until 2050!
